Antique Persian Mahal rug, circa 1900. Mahal means many things in the rug world. The antique Persian carpets from the British firm of Ziegler with large scale all-over patterns in the most desirable soft colors rust, ivory, light blue, light green, are Mahals. So are the repeating pattern rugs of the Mahal with red fields and moderate weaves. The rugs termed Sultanabads are Mahals. With this chameleon character, there is a Mahal for any space, any dcor, and any price point. Mahals come from the Mahalat area of western Persia. This one is a unique medial design of mahal.
